Upcoming changes to the GED:

The Canadian General Education Development (GED) 2002 Series exam are ending on 3 May 2024 – Canada is launching a new Canadian assessment in spring 2024 to replace the General Education Development certificate. The GED test series is available in Canada until 3 May 2024 and passing GED scores count towards the new assessment for 3 years (until May 2027). For more information, contact ged@novascotia.ca.

What is the GED exactly, anyway?

The General Education Development Tests are 5 tests: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing. Once you have successfully completed all five, you will have achieved your High School Equivalency. For more information about earning your GED in Nova Scotia click here.

Who can write their GED?

To be eligible to write your GED tests you must be 18 years of age or older, not currently in school, and you must not have a high school diploma recognized by the NS Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Three reasons to get started:

  1. Because you are worth it! Achieving your GED, or continuing your education, can increase your confidence, self esteem and your pay wage. Invest in yourself!
  2. Try something new! If you’re tired of doing the same old thing, education can open doors for you. Follow your dreams!
  3. Set a good example. Children learn and do what they see. Help your kids to continue learning and to value education by showing them that you do too!

Bringing families together through fun, interactive and educational community events and programs.

Family Literacy is all around us and in almost everything we do. At ESMV Literacy we know that we never stop learning, no matter how young or old we are. Teaching kids in your life how to make a box of Kraft dinner – that’s family literacy. Showing your granddad how to take a video with his phone – that’s family literacy. Watching your daughter read to her baby cousin – that’s family literacy. Learning to garden, crochet, play an instrument – that’s family literacy. Even having a fun game night with friends is family literacy in action! We are here to support and encourage family literacy in our communities and to offer engaging events, workshops, and programs for all learners.

Jolly Phonics

Start Date: Any time between September and June.

Locations:  Sheet Harbour, Middle Musquodoboit, Musquodoboit Harbour, Porter’s Lake.

We received funding from the Family Literacy Initiative Endowment Fund to support this fun and interactive literacy program. We have included community partners, Sheet Harbour Library, Sheet Harbour Parks and Rec, Musquodoboit Valley Family Resource Center and Eastern Shore Family Resource Association, to help us achieve our goals of introducing reading and writing to children ages 3-6. Jolly Phonics includes helping parents and caregivers understand how to include fun phonic activities in their day to day interactions with their children through sound, song and play. Reach out to us or one of our community partners; to ask about program schedules and how to sign up.
